Irwin Mitchell helped the widow of a mesothelioma victim to secure compensation after she tragically lost her husband to the illness.
Mr J, a retired fitter, and his wife came to our team after he developed mesothelioma as a result of exposure to asbestos whilst working on boilers and piping.
He was exposed to this lethal material during the 1960s and 1970s, though, as is common with this condition, he did not develop any problems until decades later.
Mr J sadly died before we could settle his claim, but working with his wife, we were able to continue with the case and secured £124,000 in compensation to ensure that she was adequately provided for in the future.
Mark Aldridge, a specialist asbestos related disease solicitor, said: “Looking at the case, whilst we were pleased that we were able to ensure that Mr J’s widow is now financially secure, it was a pity that a settlement could not be achieved whilst Mr J was still alive so he knew before his death that everything would be okay.
“Employers and their insurers need to do more to ensure that cases involving mesothelioma victims are dealt with quickly so cases such as this are settled in the lifetime of the victim.”
