    • How Can You Help Me As A High Net Worth Client?
    • While being a high net worth individual can bring greater financial security, it also means there’s often more to think about in order to plan effectively.

We can help you navigate the issues you might face, such as:

      • The complexity of UK tax laws – especially if you also have international assets to think about
      • Assets held in many different structures (i.e. trusts, businesses, rental property, investment companies)
      • Asset protection – from creditors or life events such as divorce
      • Protection of privacy – especially important for clients with a high profile in the media
      • Succession planning for businesses and family governance

Our solicitors and tax experts are able to provide the bespoke advice you need to protect your wealth for the future. We frequently work with high net worth and ultra high net worth clients and pride ourselves not only on our expertise but also our discretion.

    • How Can You Help me As An International Client?
    • If you have an international estate or members of your family live in different countries, this can add more complexity to the estate planning process.

We can help you with issues such as:

      • Changing your tax domicile or residence
      • Minimising tax on your estate
      • Moving wealth between countries
      • Keeping assets under family control
      • Providing income for family members around the world
      • Succession planning in multiple jurisdictions

There can be different cultural elements for wealth held in foreign jurisdictions – for example, forced heirship and Sharia law. This may affect how you own your assets and how you can pass them on to the next generation.

Our team works with clients around the world to help them structure their global assets and has the detailed knowledge you need to manage your wealth efficiently. Visit our International Estate Planning page for more information.

    • How Can You Help Me Plan For Business Succession?
    • If you’ve built up your own business, how to pass on that business adds an extra dimension to estate planning.

      We can help you:

      • Decide who to appoint as your successor(s)
      • Maintain some control of the running of the business after you’ve stepped down
      • Provide for other members of your family who aren’t going to inherit the business (this is often a particular concern for those with farms and rural estates)
      • Make sure any inheritance tax or capital gains tax due on your estate does not prevent the business or farm from running

Our team regularly works with business owners and those with rural estates. We can advise you on the best way to structure your estate to give you peace of mind for the future.

    • Meet The Team

What Is Probate?

The term probate refers to the process of administering a person’s estate after their death. This includes:

  • Valuing the estate
  • Collecting in the value of all their assets and possessions (this could involve selling property)
  • Paying any outstanding debts or taxes due on the estate
  • Distributing inheritance to the people named in their Will (known as ‘beneficiaries’)

Probate ends once all the accounts are settled and the inheritance has been distributed.

The person who administers the estate is called the ‘executor’. Being an executor can be time-consuming and stressful, especially when an estate is large or complex. It’s important to choose someone you trust and know can handle the responsibility.

Many people prefer to appoint a professional, such as a solicitor, to be their executor – this ensures probate will be dealt with efficiently, by someone who has the necessary expertise. Irwin Mitchell is frequently appointed as executor and has administered thousands of estates for clients.
