International

Our lawyers help clients with their personal and business needs in over 200 countries worldwide. Contact us today and speak to one of the UK’s largest and most successful independent firms, with a unique approach to supporting your international interests and ambitions.

For businesses, we offer the full range of services working closely with management teams and general counsel. For individuals, we manage and protect the global wealth and reputation for them and their family.

We’re the largest and most successful specialist International Personal Injury team in the UK, having secured over £450,000,000 in damages for our clients. We’re also one of the most active litigators in the UK with cases reaching the UK Supreme Court and the European Court of Justice.

Our international expertise is recognised throughout the global legal industry. We’ve been shortlisted for the Excellence in International Legal Services Award at the Law Society Excellence in Law Awards 2021. Our lawyers regularly receive honours from organisations such as Citywealth, Legal Week, Spears 500, and the legal directories Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners.

The key to our success is the fact that we do international law a bit differently. We’re proudly independent, which lets us appoint and recommend only the very best lawyers and other relevant professionals to work for you in different jurisdictions all over the world. You’ll always work with true specialists with a deep understanding of the local legal, tax and regulatory landscape, and who match your own culture and ways of working.

We're flexible and can direct you to a wide network of trusted and local experts to instruct directly or we can manage the entire project for you. Clients often tell us how much time, money and hassle this approach saves them. It also lets us manage the risks inherent to any cross-jurisdictional matter, so you can focus on what’s important.

Our different international teams work closely together to give you fully integrated and seamless advice at a global strategic level. We’ll get to know you or your business quickly, so all advice is tailored to your exact situation from an early stage.

As well as working with experts around the world, our dedicated international desks each have a deep knowledge of their specific region and often the language skills to match:

Our Global Network

Our network, thoughtfully built over several decades, is what makes our international services what they are. It includes law firms, accountants, corporate financiers, banks, insurers, wealth managers, fiduciaries, trust corporations, chambers of commerce, governing bodies, embassies, trade ministers and expert counsel.

When you work with us, you get access to that whole network too.

As well as our own personal connections, we’re active in some of the most important legal and financial organisations. We hold Advisory and Strategic Board positions for First Law International (FLI), the Commonwealth Enterprise & Investment Council (CWEIC) and Avrio Advocati. We have leadership roles within organisations such as the Pan European organisation of Personal Injury Lawyers (Peopil) and the American Association of Justice (AAJ).

We’re also a Strategic Partner of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and the Department for International (DiT).  Our Family Law experts are members of the International Academy of Family Lawyers (IAFL) as well.

These positions demonstrate the level of our international expertise across a range of global jurisdictions and areas of law. But they also mean we can ensure all our international clients get the very best advice and representation anywhere in the world.

Case Study – £12.5m International M&A Deal

We helped Mike sell his technology business, Autocoding Systems, to a large publicly-traded American corporation.

Autocoding Systems are based in Runcorn in the UK and specialise in software that automates and controls workflows for consumer product packaging lines. They already had an international presence before the deal, with clients around the world and operations in Melbourne, Australia, and Chicago, USA.

An international deal of this size involves a lot of due diligence, and Mike knew that they needed lawyers with the right level of M&A experience to complete the deal quickly. Along with his FD, John, he interviewed lawyers from a shortlist of firms which he felt were up to the job.

They chose to work with our corporate team, who successfully completed the £12.5m on time in February 2021 - read more about Mike’s deal

"There was a really good allocation of resource by Irwin Mitchell so you didn’t feel like you were competing for their headspace. They knew that what we needed was 100% intensive support for a number of weeks or months – we were an important deal so we got a partner and we got a team and whatever we needed, we got."

Mike Hughes, Managing Director, Autocoding Systems

“I couldn’t recommend and praise them enough. They were at all times extremely professional while being personable and a pleasure to deal with. They always ensured someone (with suitable knowledge of the transaction) was available to deal with urgent issues and would give me the nudge when I was the one holding things up. The quality of the advice was outstanding and the team took all complexities (of which there were many) into account in providing it.”

Client, complex cross-border transaction involving multiple jurisdictions and sellers

“The team was excellent in managing advisers across multiple jurisdictions to find a solution that worked cross-border and not just simply in the UK. Beyond technical ability, they showed impressive cultural intelligence and their bilingual language capabilities are a real asset.”
