Chief Executive Describes Deadly Material's Legacy As 'Great Tragedy'

The British Lung Foundation’s continued calls for the general public to recognise the dangers of asbestos exposure both at work and in the home have been welcomed by expert lawyers at Irwin Mitchell.
 
In an article for the BBC, the BLF’s Chief Executive Dame Helena Shovelton has described asbestos-related disease and mesothelioma, in particular, as “one of the great tragedies” in recent times and still regarded by many as “a health issue of the past”.

Dame Helena also added that, while workplace regulations in relation to the management and control of the material have improved considerably in recent years, a lack of understanding of the health hazards means that many still face the threat of exposure when undertaking DIY and renovations at home.

“Asbestos remains an ongoing health issue for employers, workers and the general public and, while it has been banned from use in the UK for a number of years, it is likely to be present in many public and private buildings for years to come.

“Asbestos related diseases such as mesothelioma, an incurable form of cancer, are aggressive and debilitating illnesses and can cause incredible suffering to the victims and can be very distressing for carers and family members.

Budgen added: “We would urge the Health and Safety Executive and other relevant organisations to make a strong and concerted effort to ensure that education on asbestos and awareness of its dangers is significantly improved and given the urgent attention that it rightly deserves.”
