Investment Management

If you want to achieve your financial goals, you need to regularly assess and adjust your investments. Our advisers take the hassle out of investment management and have the knowledge and experience to help you get the most out of your money.

We’ll get to know you, what you want for the future, and how much investment risk you’re comfortable with. You’ll get a detailed financial plan, and then we’ll manage your investments to make that plan a reality.

Whether you’re putting money aside for your retirement, paying for your children’s education, or simply growing your wealth, we can help.

What is discretionary portfolio management?

Our advisers offer discretionary investment management, which means we make the decision to buy and sell investments within your portfolio on your behalf. Every decision is guided by a detailed financial plan that we agree with you before we start.

We’ll create a risk profile for you based on your goals, when you want to achieve them, and your attitude to risk. This will determine what type of assets we invest in and how we manage those assets for you.

Our strategy will aim to give you a regular income, grow your wealth for the future, or a mix of the two. We’ll do this by fine-tuning your investments as time goes on and as economic conditions change.

You’ll get monthly updates on how your investments are doing, the decisions we’ve made, and why we’ve made them. And your adviser is always available if you want to know more, or if your goals have changed.

Why choose Irwin Mitchell?

Our financial advisers have over 150 years’ experience and have worked in some of the world’s top financial institutions. We take time to understand our clients as people, and you’ll get advice that’s tailor-made for you.

You won’t be pressured into off-the-shelf investments that aren’t quite right. Instead you’ll get a unique financial plan and a team that’s dedicated to putting that plan into action.

We understand that sometimes your financial plans change and there may be a time in the future when we’re not quite right for you. That’s why we charge no exit fee* and will even recommend another adviser for you to use after us.

We cover the cost for your first meeting and there’s no obligation to go any further. And with 15 offices nationwide, we can help wherever you’re based.

So call today on 0370 1500 900 or contact us online to find out more about how we can help you.

All financial and wealth management services are provided by IM Asset Management Limited which is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

Richard Potts CEO of IM Asset Management Ltd Meet the team
Our Wealth Management Process
    • Step 1: Getting to know each other
    • We pay for your first meeting. This time is to see if we’re a good fit with one another. We’ll explain our costs and services, and see if we can help you with your goals.

To find out if we can help you, we need to get to know you as a person - what you want to achieve, when you expect that to be, and what’s important to you.

If we’re both happy that we are right for you, we’ll agree the best way to start.

    • Step 2: Creating your risk profile
    • Taking the time to understand you lets us build an investment plan that’s tailored specifically to you.

The key to this is creating your own ‘risk profile’. We’ll plan your finances and your investments based on what you want from your wealth and when you want it. We’ll also look at the assets you have already and how much risk you’re comfortable with to achieve your goals.

Whether you’re planning for your children’s school fees in 10 years’ time or your retirement fund in 30, your risk profile is unique to you.

    • Step 3: Designing your individual plan
    • No two financial plans are the same. This is the stage where tailor a unique plan that combines your risk with everything else we know about you and your aspirations.

It may not always be possible to achieve your exact goals at your desired risk level. We’ll discuss alternatives, such as easing your goals, increasing investment, or taking more risk.

    • Step 4: Agreeing your plan
    • After your planning meeting, we’ll formalise our recommendations into your own bespoke wealth and financial planning report.

This will outline the method, strategy and expected results of our plan, as well as detailing the costs.

We’ll agree all our fees with you at the start, confirming how much input you want from us and the amount of work this will need. This lets us budget our time and make sure that your fees accurately reflect what you’ll get from us.

Some investments may only need a simple plan and minimal monitoring while others may be smaller in value but more complex.

    • Step 5: Putting it into action
    • Once we’ve agreed the plan and the costs, we can begin to put your plan into action.

We’ll now formally take on all of your existing investments and discuss appointing investment managers where appropriate. You’ll get a copy of your plans and the fee schedules, along with any other information you may need about your account.

During this step, we’ll keep you up-to-date throughout, so you know everything that’s happening and what needs to be done.

Just because you’ve signed the agreement doesn’t mean we drop off the radar – we’ll keep in touch.

    • Step 6: Monitoring and fine tuning
    • Your plan is now set up and running. We’ll keep a close eye on it to make sure it’s performing within the agreed risk levels. If we’re worried about anything or think we need to make any changes, we’ll get in touch.

Every six months, you’ll get a valuation of your account as well as a written investment review, and you can speak to us as often as you like between these updates.

At least once a year, we’ll also invite you to a meeting to talk about your plan and how it’s performing. We’ll run through our investment process again to check that your plan is the best it can be. For us, our advice is an ongoing relationship.

We understand that your goals can change over the years. That’s why we make sure that your plan continues to work for you by regularly monitoring your investments and reviewing your financial goals.

Ms A C

"They are extremely professional and knowledgeable at all times. The communication, advice and support we have received are second to none."

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a minimum amount I have to invest?

No. We don’t value people based on how much they have to invest.

However, not everyone needs complex financial advice. Although our fees are competitive, you may be able to get more cost-effective advice for simpler financial issues elsewhere.

Since we pay for the first meeting, we use this time to work out if we’re right for you.

We pay for your first meeting. So whatever your financial planning needs, give us a call on 0370 1500 900 and we can work out whether or not we’re right for each other. If we can’t help, we’re sure we’ll know someone who can.

How do you decide the best way to invest my money?

Every client’s needs are different. We only invest when it’s best for you, and we always treat you as an individual.

We’ll work with you to agree goals and ambitions that are realistic and achievable. From there, we agree the most efficient investment route to take that’s suited to your unique needs.

We’ll start by agreeing the best product wrappers – such as an ISA or pensions - to maximise your tax allowances. We’ll then decide which assets have the best opportunity to achieve your goals. Our service is tailored to you and your ambitions at every stage.
