Mr A was arrested by police in October 2007 on suspicion of theft of a mobile phone.
Mr A was assaulted during his arrest. He was handcuffed and had his hands twisted up his back. His head was repeatedly smashed on the floor causing injuries.
Further inappropriate comments were made to Mr A during his arrest and en route to the police station.
No charges were ever brought.
Mr A made a complaint against the police. His complaints in relation to the use of excessive force and politeness and tolerance were upheld.
A compensation claim in respect of false imprisonment and assault against the police was settled out of court for a five figure sum together with payment of costs.
