Case study – Resolving A Local Micro-Brewery’s Trademark Dispute

Working with passionate and innovative businesses is at the heart of what we do. When Intrepid Brewing Company – a microbrewery based in the Derbyshire Dales – fell into a trademark dispute with a large national brewer, our lawyers were able to help.

After the dispute was resolved, we jumped at the chance to head down to the brewery for the day to brew our own collaboration beer, Trade Mark IPA.

The beer was a twist on the traditional India Pale Ale, named to draw attention to the value of intellectual property rights for small businesses. It was launched to coincide with the first anniversary of Intrepid’s beer being sold in pubs, and to mark the end of the trademark dispute.

It was important for the branding of Trade Mark IPA to tell something of the story behind the relationship between us and Intrepid, which started with a trade mark dispute, and for it to make people think about the value of branding and the associated legal issues."
