The Global Talent route is a gateway to working in the UK. This visa is designed for those recognised as leaders or emerging leaders, offering minimal restrictions and, in many cases, a fast track to settlement.
The route also allows dependants, such as partners and children, to join the main applicant in the UK.
Who can apply?
The Global Talent route is open to talented individuals in fields such as the arts, technology, research, and academia.
There are two ways to apply:
- Prestigious prize
An individual can qualify if they have won a prestigious prize, such as the Booker Prize or an Academy Award. - Endorsement
If you have not received an eligible prize, you must obtain an endorsement confirming that you are either exceptionally talented or recognised as an emerging leader with the potential for future excellence in your field.
This endorsement must come from one of the following designated bodies:
- Arts Council England – for the arts, culture, architecture, fashion, film and television
- British Academy – for humanities and social sciences
- Royal Academy of Engineering – for engineering
- Royal Society – for natural sciences and medical science research
- Tech Nation – for digital technology
- UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) – for science and research
The endorsing bodies consider applications in their professional field and issue endorsements based on your ability to meet the sector-specific criteria.
While each endorsing body has its own specific criteria, they generally consider the following:
- Exceptional Talent - for those who have already made a significant impact as leaders
- Exceptional Promise - for those at the start of their careers, showing strong potential
The endorsing body normally requires letters of support from experts in your field.
What can you do under the Global Talent route?
Once an endorsement has been secured, you are eligible to apply for a Global Talent visa.
You can apply for a visa to enter the UK under this category, or switch into this route if already in the UK.
Initial permission may be granted for up to five years, and you can apply to extend your stay indefinitely, provided you continue to meet the scheme’s requirements.
While in the UK, applicants can:
- Work for any employer
- Work as a director of a company
- Be self-employed
- Change jobs without notifying the Home Office
- Carry out voluntary work
- Study
Path to Settlement
The Global Talent route leads to Settlement, also known as Indefinite Leave to Remain.
To apply, you must have:
- Spent a continuous period of five years in the UK (or three years if eligible for a fast-track route)
- Not breached any UK immigration laws
- Met the requirements in relation to absences
- Have sufficient knowledge of the English language and have passed a Life in the UK test
- Have earned money in a field which relates to your prize or endorsement.
The Global Talent route can be combined with other immigration routes, such as the Skilled Worker route, to lead to settlement.
How can we help?
The Global Talent visa is one of the most flexible immigration options. You are not tied to a particular role or employer and can pursue your own interests.
The endorsement process can be challenging, as applicants must demonstrate that their work is world- leading or potentially world- leading.
Our team of immigration specialists can:
- Carry out a thorough review of your eligibility
- Offer hands-on support when preparing and submitting both your endorsement and immigration application
- Advise on the documents you need to ensure your application has the best chance of success.
