Many of our solicitors choose to specialise in different aspects of Military injuries – it’s what allows us apply such expertise to each individual case and support our clients in the best way possible. Simon Harrington, partner in our Cambridge team, specialises in Non-Freezing Cold Injuries (NFCI) and the impact they have on serving personnel and veterans.
What is a Non-Freezing Cold Injury?
A NFCI is caused by long periods of exposure to cold conditions and is also known as immersion foot or “trench foot”. The symptoms of NFCIs include being more sensitive to the cold than before, as well as chronic pain in the limbs and extremities.
For people of Black, African or Caribbean origin, and others from hot climates, the risks of developing a NFCI are significantly higher due to the shift in temperature change.
For this year’s Armed Forces Day we saluted ethnic minorities who have served or who currently serve and asked our clients to share what being in the military means to them. You can look back on the video below.
The effects of a NFCI injury can be felt by the whole family as a person’s career can be lost through medical discharge or a loss of British residency. We work with people diagnosed with NICI to find out if anyone was at fault for not providing the correct safety equipment and therefore causing their injury, and that they are held accountable. This means we can secure the best medical care, rehabilitation and financially security for serving or ex-Military personnel and their family.
Our Specialist Team
NFCI specialist Simon Harrington chose an alternative route into his legal career by studying part-time at law school to gain the qualifications needed whilst also undertaking a full-time Legal Practice Course (LPC). After being awarded the National Law Society Prize for outstanding performance, he qualified in 2004. He was proud to later be short-listed for the Eclipse Proclaim Young Achiever of the Year in 2009.
From early on his career, Simon knew he wanted to specialist in Military Injury and specifically NFCI cases. Since then, Simon and our Cambridge team have worked with hundreds of Commonwealth soldiers and have supported clients in recovering circa. £35 million whilst raising awareness of the dangers of this injury and campaigning for improved Military safety.
Simon is also the Secretary of the Royal British Legion Solicitors Group and is recognised as a ‘leading individual’ in Chambers and Partners legal directory.
The majority of service personnel who contact Simon do so through personal recommendations and we’re proud of the reputation Simon and his team have worked hard to secure.
"Simon Harrington and his team went above and beyond. They kept me in the loop at all times and explained everything on a level I would understand rather than just sending over legal documents and leaving me scratch my head. Overall I couldn't fault them. I have already recommended them to close friends that are in a similar situation." - Daniel, 5* Trustpilot review
