Team Cycled More Than 2000 Miles Over A Month
Legal experts at Irwin Mitchell dusted off their bicycles to take part in a fund-raising challenge for a leading sepsis charity.
Throughout September, more than 30 employees at the firm took part in Cycle4Sepsis, organised by the UK Sepsis Trust to raise awareness of the condition and funds to help those affected.
By the end of the month, the team had raised a total of more than £1200 after completing around 2660 miles.
Lucy Macklin, specialist medical negligence lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, was delighted with the effort put in by her colleagues.
Expert Opinion
“After hitting our initial target miles in our first week, we decided to increase the goal – for the team to cycle at least 2000 miles. To complete it was such a great achievement for us all, and most importantly it helped raise vital funds for the UK Sepsis Trust.
Early diagnosis and treatment of sepsis is key towards survival, and the money raised as part of Cycle4Sepsis will enable the charity to continue its fight in raising awareness of the signs and symptoms and will help fund support for survivors and the families affected by this life-threatening condition.
We’re proud to support the UK Sepsis Trust and the incredible work that it does.”

Cycle4Sepsis has been running for eight years, with fund-raising more important than ever. In the UK alone, 245,000 people are affected by sepsis every year, with at least 48,000 losing their lives.
In addition, the UK Sepsis Trust estimates that a number of people discharged from hospital after contracting Covid-19 are likely to develop sepsis. As a result, the charity has launched a Covid-19 Recovery Response programme, and the funds raised through the Cycle4Sepsis challenge will help continue to deliver their support services.
Sarah Hamilton-Fairley, Strategy and Development Director with the UK Sepsis Trust, said: “The UK Sepsis Trust has been delighted to partner with the team at Irwin Mitchell for this year’s event. This has not only raised much-needed funds during this challenging time, but has also helped extend the reach of our sepsis message. Such enthusiastic engagement is vital to enabling us to continue our work of supporting families and raising awareness of the symptoms of a condition that affects so many people. One of the charity’s main aim is to educate communities to be suitably informed and empowered to ‘Just Ask.’
“The trust is incredibly grateful to Irwin Mitchell for their ongoing participation and proactive involvement which provides an excellent example of how business and charity can work together successfully to achieve positive outcomes. We very much look forward to continuing this relationship and working on future projects.”
World Sepsis Day took place on 13 September. To mark the event, Sarah Coles, medical negligence expert at Irwin Mitchell, and Ron Daniels, the founder of the UK Sepsis Trust, hosted a podcast on the impact the condition has had on so many people up and down the country, and the crucial role played by the charity in raising awareness.
Symptoms of sepsis include slurred speech or confusion, extreme shivering or muscle pain, passing no urine in a day, severe breathlessness, a feeling like you’re going to die, and mottled or discoloured skin.
