Immigration Experts Say Brexit Bill Amendment Doesn’t Deal With Future Challenge Of Recruiting EU Staff
Immigration experts at Irwin Mitchell say the likely Government defeat in the House of Lords over securing the rights of EU citizens living in the UK, doesn’t deal with the future challenges employers face of recruiting EU staff post-Brexit.
Peers are expected to agree to amend the draft legislation of the Brexit Bill to protect the rights of EU citizens living in the UK.
Home Secretary Amber Rudd tried to reassure members that EU nationals' status would be a priority once Brexit talks begin, but a cross-party amendment calling for a guarantee is expected to be backed by most peers.
The rights of EU nationals to remain in the UK post-Brexit has been a highly contentious issue during the bill’s parliamentary passage.
In an open letter to peers, Ms Rudd said a guarantee of their right to stay in the UK would not help the thousands of UK citizens living within the EU and could potentially leave them in limbo if the other 27 members of the bloc failed to make reciprocal assurances.
"This isn't just about ensuring British businesses and our public sector have access to the right workers," she wrote.
