Expert Serious Injury Lawyers Are Helping The Victim Access Specialist Rehabilitation And Support Following The Crash
The father of a man who was left paralysed and unable to feed himself after being involved in a catastrophic crash has spoken of his relief as the driver was jailed after pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and other offences.
Alex Everington, 29, was a passenger in a Ford Focus driven by Ian Maughan, 30, on 2nd January this year. Maughan lost control of the vehicle and span off York Road, in Redcar, and down a disused railway embankment.
Alex, a father-of-two from Redcar, suffered life-changing injuries as a result of the crash and remains in the Spinal Cord Injuries Unit in Middlesbrough where he is undergoing rehabilitative treatment.
Expert serious injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell have been instructed by Alex to help him gain access to specialist support and rehabilitation.
Today, Maughan, of Westbourne Grove in Redcar, was sentenced to three years and four months imprisonment at Teesside Crown Court, after pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, fleeing the scene of an accident and driving without insurance.
Ian Everington, Alex’s father, said: “Although I am pleased that justice has been served, no sentence can change what has happened to my son. He will never walk again.”
“Obviously Alex is still struggling to come to terms with what has happened and it is so upsetting to see how hard this has affected his daughter, Ellie-Mae, and son, Mason.”

Expert Opinion
“This incident highlights the tragic and devastating consequences a lack of concentration and attention behind the wheel can have.
“Due to the actions of one man, a young father has been permanently and very seriously injured and will need significant rehabilitation to regain some form of independence. We will continue working with Alex and his family to help him secure the necessary funds to help to maximise his long term recovery.” Fran Mayes - Partner
