Legal Experts Say More Needs To Be Done To Help Sufferers

A new review of mental health care in England claims services are so poor and underfunded that "lives are being ruined.” 

Expert medical negligence lawyers at Irwin Mitchell have backed calls for the government to invest more funds into helping those who suffer with mental health problems. 

The taskforce, set up by NHS England found that many of the one in four UK residents who experience a mental health problem each year were getting inadequate care or no help at all.

The report said that poor mental health services were “leading to hundreds of thousands of lives being put on hold or ruined and thousands of tragic an unnecessary deaths”. 

The report made recommendations which included improving access to talking therapies and crisis care. 

On hearing the results of the review the government pledged to treat a million more patients by 2020 and invest an extra £1bn to tackle the problems. 

The extra funding is expected to come from the £8.4bn the government claimed they had set aside for the health service during their term.

Prime Minister David Cameron said he hoped the investment would help put "mental and physical healthcare on an equal footing".
