Presumed Liability For Drivers Could Lead The Way For UK To Join European Laws
Cyclists have handed a petition to MSPs at Scottish Parliament that calls for a change in the law following accidents involving cars and bikes.
The law of presumed liability, which assumes drivers are at fault over cyclists, exists in most European countries outside of the UK, and provides an incentive for drivers to take more care on the road.
It is predicted that the law will lead to a reduction in the number of accidents involving cars and bikes. It is also hope that the increased safety on the roads will assist with promoting walking and cycling, an area where Scotland lags behind other countries.
The petition quotes research that found the risk of walking a mile compared with driving a mile has risen by 37% over ten years.

Expert Opinion
Road safety is understandably an incredibly emotive issue and we have seen through our work numerous occasions when people have suffered life-changing injuries or lost loved ones as a result of collisions. <br/> <br/>"It is vital that all road users always ensure the safety of themselves and others is their priority, regardless of their mode of transport. <br/> <br/>"Generally speaking, anything that encourages and promotes road safety should be welcomed. These proposed changes will be carefully considered by authorities and it will be interesting to see whether the Scottish Parliament chooses to take the issue forward."
