Specialist Industrial Disease Lawyers Call On Employers To Improve Protection From Excessive Noise For Workers
Specialist industrial disease lawyers at Irwin Mitchell have called on employers to improve the protection provided to workers to reduce the number of people who suffer from hearing damage caused by their working environment.Ahead of National Tinnitus Awareness Week, which is organised by the British Tinnitus Association (BTA) and runs from 2nd-8th February 2015, expert lawyers have said some employees are not given basic protective equipment to protect them from excessive noise in the workplace.
According to figures from the BTA, 10% of UK adults suffer with tinnitus, with one in ten going on to report the condition has a severe impact on the quality of their day-to-day life, including depression, anxiety, stress and sleep deprivation.
Figures from the BTA indicate that around 6.3 million people in the UK are thought to suffer with some form of tinnitus, which can have a significant impact on their lives and cause them anger and frustration.
Mark Allen, a specialist industrial disease lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, said:
Tinnitus is a condition which leaves victims hearing noises in their ears or head when there is no external noise present and is often described by sufferers as a constant background noise, such as humming, buzzing, ringing or whistling.
It can often have far-reaching consequences, including depression, sleep deprivation and anxiety. It can also cause embarrassment for sufferers, as they can struggle to follow conversations and regularly ask people to repeat themselves.
Tinnitus Awareness Week 2015 runs from 2nd-8th February and aims to raise awareness of the condition. Irwin Mitchell is getting involved in several events across the country to help provide those affected with support and advice.
