Spate Of Deaths Raises Concern Over Yorkshire Road Safety
A spike in the number of deaths in East Yorkshire has prompted calls for motorists to take more care on the roads.
The father of one of those who has died in the area in recent years is among those trying to improve road safety. Taxi driver Adie Martin lost his 18-year-old son Daniel in an accident three years ago when his motorcycle was involved in a collision with a car in Kingswood, on the outskirts of Hull.
Speaking to the Hull Daily Mail, he said the loss of nine lives on the roads of the East Riding so far this year shows road safety needs to improve.
He commented: "I can sympathise with what the family and friends of the nine people are going through.
"It is not just the person who has lost their life, but the impact it has on the family and friends of that person.
"My family have gone through hell in the past three years and I'm still going through hell. My son's death could have been avoided."
Mr Martin has been campaigning by handing out stickers to customers, encouraging drivers to take more care when sharing the road with motorcyclists and bike riders.
He argued that the roads of the area are not particularly dangerous, but drivers need to take "more care" when people on two wheels are around.
The spate of deaths included four in just over one week in April alone, including a motorbike accident when a 25-year-old rider collided with a Peugeot 5007 people carrier on the B1230.
One more encouraging statistic is the figure for the city of Hull itself, with just one person dying in a road accident there so far this year, compared with seven in 2013.
Across Britain as a whole, Department for Transport figures suggest the number of people killed on Britain's roads has risen this year.
Data for the January to March 2014 quarter indicated that the number of fatalities was up by four per cent on the same period last year to 1,750, while the overall tally of those killed or seriously injured rose by two per cent to 24,160.
