Lawyers Support Event to Raise Awareness of Campaign For Victims Of Poor Practice
An event to raise awareness of a campaign which supports victims of malpractice within the health and beauty industry is taking place this week with a series of high profile supporters keen to highlight the impact of negligent treatments.
Law firm Irwin Mitchell’s specialist cosmetic surgery team represents many victims of negligent beauty treatments and is backing both the event and the campaign. The firm has acted on behalf of people who have suffered injuries after undergoing treatments such as Botox injections, illegal teeth whitening procedures, hair removal and hair dying.
The Safety in Beauty campaign is run by health and beauty specialist Antonia Mariconda who works as a beauty coach to both celebrities and the general public. She has been supporting victims of poor practice via social media and is now formalizing her campaign to expose unsafe beauty practices with a view to keeping the public informed of unscrupulous practitioners. The hashtag #safetyinbeauty is currently being used on Twitter to support the campaign.
Mandy Luckman, a medical negligence lawyer specialising in cosmetic surgery claims, said: “We are really pleased to be involved in sponsoring this campaign because too many people are becoming victims to negligent treatment because of a lack of regulation over cosmetic procedures.
“We’ve seen firsthand the horrific impact that poor treatment and practices can have on people’s lives not only physically but also psychologically which can often be more damaging.
“It is crucial that more is done to improve safety across the industry. This can only be achieved with proper regulation of treatments and procedures so that only specially trained individuals can carry out treatments which if not done correctly can cause harm to patients.
“There are some treatments which are perfectly safe if carried out properly and the correct patch tests are carried out for example, but there are also some treatments which in our opinion should not be carried out without some form of regulation. It is difficult for the general public to be able to recognise the difference between rogue practitioners and those that have been properly trained and can carry out the procedures safely.
“These so called non-invasive techniques such as Botox injections need to better regulated so that this knowledge can be shared and people can be better informed when they choose who is to carry out their treatment.”
The event on 17 October features the president of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry as well as some high profile celebrity backers of the safety in beauty campaign.
Determined to take disreputable ‘professionals’ to task, Antonia said: “We all have the right to look and feel better about ourselves, but that doesn’t mean we deserve to suffer the consequences of damage inflicted by incompetent practitioners.”
To launch the Safety in Beauty campaign, a group of female celebrities who are firmly committed to the initiative will be coming together at the W Hotel to pledge their support. Scores of professional practitioners and medical professionals have already pledged their support the initiative, “it’s all about people power now” says Antonia, who is hailed as the new “Martin Lewis’ of the beauty industry, “doctors, surgeons, and beauty professionals are all in this to make a living it’s a hugely profitable industry, I’m not! So therefore as a member of the public, I stand for and represent the people, after all, who is on their side?”
Antonia Mariconda intends to officially register the campaign as charity in the New Year, with a view to becoming one of the UK’s only independent charities that will help members of the public who have been victims of malpractice.
