We successfully recovered compensation for two BT employees who died as a result of asbestos exposure in Cardiff during the 1980s.
Our clients, Mr K and Mrs J, both worked at the company’s Coryton complex while construction work was underway to convert the training centre into office space. As part of the conversion, partition walls and ceiling tiles were being stripped out, leaving large amounts of asbestos exposed and causing asbestos dust and debris to be released into the air. The area was not sealed off, and both Mr K and Mrs J were passing the site on a regular basis in the course of their work, exposed to the toxic chemical.
Both contracted mesothelioma as a result of their asbestos exposure. With their consent we brought evidence from each of their claims into the other’s case, strengthening both claims. We secured a six figure settlement for each client.
Mr K was only 46 when he died, leaving behind a young widow and step daughter. Mrs J was 66, and left a son, daughter and young grandchild. We were able to secure Mrs J’s compensation during her lifetime, but Mr K sadly died before his claim was settled – we recovered compensation on behalf of his estate and for his young dependant wife.
Kim Barrett, a specialist lawyer in asbestos cases, represented both clients in their claim. She said: “Sadly we do see every day the effect that asbestos exposure on people and their families decades down the line. We’re pleased we could secure compensation for Mrs J during her lifetime, and that Mr K’s compensation can provide support for his young bereaved widow. However, it is tragic that both families should lose their relatives because of where they were 30 years ago.”
