Irwin Mitchell’s Serious Injury team helped a man after he was crushed by a one and a half tonne bar in an accident at work.
Our client was working at a forge when the accident occurred. A large, heavy steel bar, weighing over one and a half tonnes, fell onto him leaving our client with multiple fractures to his pelvis and both legs.
The man underwent surgery to fix the fractures which was followed by a long period of rehabilitation. He also suffered a significant psychological reaction due to the nature of the accident and his injuries.
The insurers of our client’s employers accepted responsibility and we arranged for the man to have physiotherapy (supplementary to his NHS treatment) and psychological therapy, whilst his case was going on.
Our client really benefitted from the treatment and tenaciously managed to return to work, albeit in a different role.
Working alongside our client, serious injury expert Louise Morgan secured a settlement of over £125,000 on his behalf. Our client was not only compensated for his injuries and ongoing symptoms, but also for his ongoing partial loss of earnings which would affect him until retirement.
In relation to the case, Louise said: “Our client sustained serious injuries whilst at work but to his credit did his utmost to make as good a recovery as possible and I was pleased that we were able to assist in his rehabilitation by securing funding from his employer’s insurers for additional physiotherapy and for psychotherapy.
“The compensation package included funds for a stair lift to be fitted in his home as he will have difficulty using stairs as he gets older as a result of his injuries. Money was also allocated to help fit a level access shower in our client’s bathroom and to employ decorators and gardeners to do work he is no longer able to do.”
