We helped a woman who suffered serious injuries in a motorcycle accident secure a seven-figure compensation settlement, which will enable her to buy suitable accommodation and fund the rehabilitation she needs.
Our client, Christina, suffered a brain injury as well as orthopaedic and internal injuries as a result of the motorbike crash. She suffered complex, on-going neurological, cognitive and psychological problems and couldn’t return to work. Her previous solicitors contacted a GP for an expert report and begun court proceedings, but the value of the claim was limited to £100,000.
Martha Sweet, an Associate Solicitor in our Leeds Serious Injury team, took over the case in January 2013. She amended the Court documents to reflect the true value of the claim, before getting judgment for our client on a 100% basis. We then secured interim funds for Christina to pay for:
- Case management
- Support worker input
- Psychology
- Occupational therapy
- Physiotherapy
Important parts of the case were disputed, including Christina’s capacity to manage her legal and financial affairs, the cause of her ongoing difficulties and the level of care required. We acquired extensive expert evidence and witness statements to support her case.
We negotiated a settlement in December 2015 for a sum of more than £1 million (subject to Court approval). Christina then received advice from IM Asset Management regarding investment of her compensation.
Martha Sweet said: “Our client needs single storey accommodation as a result of her difficulties. The sum will enable her to purchase a bungalow and will meet her care and therapy needs for the rest of her life.”
