Irwin Mitchell’s International Personal Injury team helped to secure compensation for a man who suffered pneumonia whilst on holiday in Italy.
Our client was staying at the Bellevue Hotel, Lake Como, when he developed severe symptoms. The man had noticed that his hotel room had poor hygiene standards, including a high level of dampness.
The holidaymaker fell ill shortly after returning home to the UK, experiencing severe headaches, a high temperature and lethargy.
The man came to expert travel solicitors at Irwin Mitchell for help. We approached the tour operator TUI UK Ltd in an attempt to settle the matter out of court but unfortunately they ignored our requests. Following a trial, our client secured £6,500 in compensation which took into consideration his pain, suffering and loss of amenity.
Our client was thrilled with the outcome of his case and said: “I am now entitled to compensation for TUI UK but this was never about the money.
“The general manager of the hotel refused to accept that the room we stayed in was a health and safety risk and I wanted to ensure that no one else had to suffer the way we have.”
