Serious injury solicitors at Irwin Mitchell acted on behalf of a promising young doctor who was forced to give up his dream after he sustained severe injuries in a car crash.
Our client was initially involved in a car accident in November 2007, when another motorist pulled out in front of him. As a consequence, he suffered upper back, right shoulder and neck injuries which kept him out of work for nine months.
The man was working at a hospital with the aim of becoming a specialist eye surgeon and had to undergo intense rehabilitation before being able to return to his role. However, in the summer of 2009 he was forced to give up on his first choice of becoming an eye surgeon due to continuing pain from his injuries. He therefore began training as a GP.
Second crash
Our client was involved in a second car accident in November 2009 which exacerbated his injuries. He was again forced to leave his position and undergo more intensive physiotherapy. Despite this, the agonising pain he suffers has now forced him to only work three days a week which has hampered his career progression dramatically.
Not only has our client’s professional life been affected but he is now unable to sleep pain-free and requires help from his parents for everyday tasks such as cleaning and shopping.
Compensation for injuries
Andrea Burke, a Partner and specialist serious injury lawyer, represented the client and helped to secure him a six-figure settlement in accordance with his pain, suffering and loss of earnings.
Andrea said: “Over the last seven years our client has been through a significant amount of physical pain and suffering and he has also had to come to terms mentally with the fact that these crashes have prevented him from becoming an ophthalmic surgeon.
“I am delighted that we were able to secure a significant settlement for Christopher to help him with his on-going recovery and hope that he can now begin to put this ordeal behind him, move on with his life and progress in his medical career.”
Discussing the case, our client said: “The last few years have been a complete nightmare and it has been extremely difficult to come to terms with the fact that I will not be able to do the job I worked so hard for.
“I am glad that a settlement has now been secured and although I will live with my injuries for the rest of my life, I will now be able to start putting my nightmare behind me and I am determined to make a success of my role as a GP.”
