Our Birmingham serious injury team reached an out of court settlement on behalf of a Midlands man who sustained a spinal cord injury in a road traffic accident.
Our client suffered a spinal cord transection, causing tetraplegia. He has very limited movement in his upper arms, but no useful function in his hands.
Stephen Nye, Partner and head of the Serious Injury team headed the legal team advising in the case. He commented: "This was a devastating injury to a young man, leaving him wholly dependent on others for all aspects of his day-to-day care and activities that most of us take for granted. The accident was caused by the sheer stupidity of a young driver who failed to properly control a vehicle he should not have been driving.
"My client has faced his difficulties with great dignity and strength of character and we are delighted to have secured such a significant settlement for him.
"In the course of the case, we obtained substantial interim funds for the implementation of a care package and therapies. We also secured funds for the purchase of a property and an adapted vehicle.
"The final settlement is on the basis of periodical payments (annual payments for life to cover care costs), which will provide peace of mind and financial security throughout our client's life."
