Irwin Mitchell’s specialist Asbestos Related Disease team has helped the family of man claim compensation after he developed the asbestos related disease, mesothelioma, from exposure to asbestos during his working life.
Mr H was exposed to asbestos during his employment at GEC Measurements Ltd based in Stafford. He was employed as an electrician to develop relay techniques on controlling circuits.
The majority of his work was based off site in electrical substations, testing relays and ensuring that the electrics there operated correctly. Mr H was employed by GEC Measurements Ltd on contracts all over the UK, in particular in Scotland as well as in countries such as Sudan, Hong Kong, Singapore and various countries in the Middle East.
Mr H was exposed to asbestos when working in electrical substations and in power stations, oil refineries, oil platforms, gas installation and hydroelectric power stations. Mr H frequently came into contact with asbestos insulated pipe work in such locations as power stations, oil refineries and platforms. The insulation on the pipe work was often in a poor state of repair, releasing asbestos fibres well after the date that such exposures were known to be dangerous.
Sadly Mr H developed the asbestos related cancer mesothelioma as a result of his asbestos exposure at GCE Measurements Limited, and he died from the disease within a few months of his diagnosis.
Prior to his death, Mr H decided to contact Irwin Mitchell’s specialised asbestos related disease team and one of our experience solicitors, Iain Shoolbred, was able to deal with his claim. Iain was able to obtain a detailed statement from him before he passed away.
Following his death, the firm was instructed by his estate to continue pursuing the claim against Mr H’s former employer and following negotiations we were able to secure the family of Mr H a sum of £240,000 in compensation.
Iain Shoolbred, associate solicitor, who acted for Mr H’s family said: “It was very pleasing to recover such a substantial settlement for Mr H’s widow. He had started the claim during his lifetime to continue provide for his wife after he passed away and by successfully concluding this case, we have given Mrs H a significant degree of financial security.”
