Irwin Mitchell’s serious injury team in Birmingham has recovered damages of £3.5M for a young man who sustained a spinal cord injury in a road accident.
Our client was struck by a vehicle whilst crossing the road. Liability was originally denied by the defendant insurer for a considerable period; however the issue was resolved in favour of our client, with a small reduction to reflect his contributory negligence.
Once that issue of liability had been resolved we were able to secure substantial interim funds for our client to allow him to purchase a suitable single storey property, an adapted vehicle and a range of much needed equipment and therapies.
Stephen Nye, Partner in our Birmingham office headed the legal team and comments: "We are delighted to have achieved such a favourable outcome for our client. He faced his injuries with great courage and has taken a very positive outlook on his life, achieving a very high standard in wheelchair sports.
"One important aspect of this case was the availability of new technologies for spinally injured people. In particular we identified a new robotic exoskeleton which has just come onto the UK market. Our client is now one of the very first users of this revolutionary piece of equipment."
