Our client, a former resident of Selly Oak in Birmingham, sustained a serious spinal cord injury in a road accident which happened when she was on a short holiday in Scotland.
She was a rear seat passenger in a vehicle being driven by a friend. He lost control of the vehicle on a bend, striking a bridge and an oncoming vehicle. Our client was initially treated at a specialist unit in Glasgow and then returned to her family in Hong Kong on a medically supported flight.
There were complex insurance issues in this claim and it was alleged that our client was not wearing her seatbelt.
Stephen Nye, Partner at our Birmingham office handled the case and commented; "This was an unusual case in many respects, the accident being outside of the jurisdiction and my client being on the other side of the world. Whilst this presented additional challenges, we were able to draw together a multinational legal team, including experts from Australia, to assist our client and achieve such a positive outcome. The settlement, which is approximately $HK37 million, will ensure that our client has the means to access the care, therapy and equipment that she needs as a result of her injury."
