Irwin Mitchell Solicitors have successfully recovered a substantial compensation payment for Mr G, a living mesothelioma sufferer.  Mr G worked for West Midlands Gas Board between 1956 and 1966 at their sites at the Nechells Gas Works and Windsor Street Gas Works in Birmingham.  He also worked as a general fitter working at many gas board sites throughout the West Midlands after he completed his apprenticeship.

Mr G was exposed to asbestos in many different forms during his work for the West Midlands Gas Board.  As an apprentice he regularly stripped asbestos lagging from pipe work and boilers.  He also worked alongside insulators reapplying asbestos lagging.  He maintained valves on the boilers and pipe work which needed to be repacked with asbestos wall and spent over 12 month dismantling railway engines which has asbestos insulation on their boilers. 

Mr G developed breathing difficulties in December 2008 and was diagnosed with mesothelioma in May 2009.  Irwin Mitchell Solicitors were instructed and, whilst liability was admitted, the Defendant contested the value of the claim.  The claim was issued at Court in the expedited procedure operated by the Royal Courts of Justice in London to deal with mesothelioma claims as quickly as possible.  Settlement was achieved in March 2010, less than 12 months after he instructed Irwin Mitchell.

Mr G of Cannock in the West Midlands received £170,000 in compensation.
