Couple Demand Answers After Illness Ruins Luxury Dominican Republic Resort Stay

A couple who both suffered gastroenteritis during a stay at a Dominican Republic holiday resort towards the end of last year have called on legal experts to help them discover how the problems emerged.

Alan Lewsey, 51, and his wife Claire, 52, from Dartford, Kent, developed symptoms including stomach cramps, diarrhoea and vomiting just two days into their two-week break at the Luxury Bahia Principe Ambar Blue resort in October 2017 which was booked through TUI UK Ltd trading as First Choice.

The problems went on to have a major impact on the rest of the holiday, with the pair both needing medical treatment at the resort due to the severity of their symptoms.

Following the problems, the couple instructed Irwin Mitchell’s specialist International Personal Injury team to investigate the circumstances related to the illness and whether more could have been done to prevent it.

“This case is sadly like a great number we are involved in, with our clients going on to develop very serious illness problems which went on to impact on a significant proportion of their holiday.

“The seriousness of gastric illness of this kind should not be downplayed, as we have seen numerous occasions when such problems have left victims with long-term health problems from which they never fully recover.

“With this in mind, we are determined to help our clients gain answers regarding what they have faced in the hope that lessons can be learned for the future.”

Alan and Claire’s all-inclusive break in the Dominican Republic began on October 13th 2017 and it was a number of days later that their symptoms emerged.

Alan said: “The illness was absolutely horrendous and we just couldn’t believe how bad we felt. This was meant to be a relaxing luxury break and the problems just completely ruined that for us.

“Nothing will change what we have been through but we at least feel we deserve some answers regarding how the illness emerged and whether it could have been avoided.

“While it is too late for us we only hope that such information would ensure that steps can be taken to protect others from similar issues in the future.”
