Lawyers Instructed Regarding Illness suffered during stay at Hotel Playa Esperanza
A woman who needed hospital treatment after she developed serious gastric illness during a stay at a Majorcan holiday resort last year has called on specialist lawyers to help her gain answers regarding what caused her to fall ill.
Holly Burkett, 24, from Cottenham, Cambridgeshire started to suffer from symptoms including diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal cramps just two days into her family break booked through TUI UK Limited at the Playa Esperanza Hotel in August 2017, with the problems proving so severe that she was hospitalised during her stay.
With the issues showing no sign of improvement on her return to the UK, Holly sought further support from her GP and also needed to be prescribed antibiotics after developing an infection which she was advised may have been caused by the cannula she had inserted into her arm in the hospital in Majorca.
During the holiday, Holly noticed that the food served by the Hotel was on occasions lukewarm in temperature and was sometimes uncovered. She also reported sometimes seeing flies in the restaurant.
Following the ordeal, Holly instructed specialist lawyers in Irwin Mitchell’s International Personal Injury team to investigate the issues she faced on the holiday and help her discover whether more could have been done to prevent the illness she suffered.

Holly’s eleven night stay at the Playa Esperanza Hotel began on August 20th last year, but it was only two days later when her first symptoms developed. She sought the assistance from the hotel doctor who advised her that she would need to go to hospital. Holly was taken to hospital in an ambulance where she received medication, injections as well as being placed on an IV drip to try and re-hydrate her.
She said: “The illness really hit me hard and I soon had no option but to go to hospital. When you head out on holiday you simply never expect that you’re going to face these issues, so it was a very upsetting time.
“I am aware that I was not the only one who was suffering from an illness at the hotel.
“To make matters worse, the illness just did not get any better back in the UK and it was particularly frustrating to then develop the infection on my arm.
“I’m desperate to put the whole ordeal behind me but I feel that I will only be able to move on if I get some answers regarding what I’ve been through. While nothing will change what has happened, I hope that taking this step will assist me to obtain answers as to what happened and establish whether more could have been done to avoid it.”
