High Court Gives Go-Ahead For Plans Put Forward By Estate And Victims’ Lawyers
Specialist child abuse lawyers representing victims of abuse by the late television personality Jimmy Savile have welcomed the approval of a compensation scheme which will allow them to get justice in relation to the ordeals they have faced.
The High Court in London this week approved the creation of the scheme which has been agreed by Savile’s estate, which has been created to provide victims with vital funds for ongoing support as soon as possible.
Irwin Mitchell’s specialist Child Abuse team, which represents both victims of affected by the Jimmy Savile scandal and others who have been encouraged to come forward as a result of the revelations, have described the move as a vital step forward.
Expert Opinion
The huge toll that abuse takes on victims both psychologically and physically cannot be underestimated and while no amount of money will ever make up for what they have been through, this is still a welcome move.
"Ultimately, it should ensure that victims of Savile will be able to get some justice for what they have been through, with the vital funds being put towards ongoing care and support that they will need to continue to come to terms with what they have been through.
"While the terrible consequences of the abuse they have endured will no doubt stay with them in some form for the rest of their lives, the approval of the compensation scheme should be a positive step which allows them to start looking in some way towards the future." Tracey Storey - Partner
