Witnesses Needed As Work Continues To Secure Support Package
The parents of a teenager who suffered a serious brain injury after being hit by a car eight months ago have launched an appeal for witnesses who saw the incident to come forward, as lawyers continue to work to secure him the support package he needs.
Nathan Gardiner, from Gateshead, was just 13-years-old and enjoying a trip to the family’s caravan in Northumberland when he was knocked down by the driver of a white Vauxhall Combo van as he crossed Lintonville Terrace, Ashington. The incident occurred on Friday 24th August 2012 at around 1pm as Nathan crossed the pedestrian crossing opposite the Asda Superstore car park.
Nathan suffered a serious head injury and was rushed to Wansbeck General Hospital. He was later transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle where he underwent life saving surgery. The youngster remained in hospital until 9 November when he was discharged home to the care of his parents. Nathan has recently started a phased return to school but continues to suffer from some cognitive difficulties and suffers from left sided weakness affecting his arm and leg.
Irwin Mitchell’s serious injury team represent Nathan and are helping Nathan’s parents in their battle for justice to access the vital funds which will ensure their son can continue to access the support and rehabilitation he needs to deal with the ongoing effects of his injuries.
However, as part of their enquiries, they are keen to hear from witnesses who saw the crash.
Mum Anita said: “Seeing your child hurt in a road accident like this is every parent’s worst nightmare and it’s been an incredibly frightening and stressful time for all of us.
“Nathan has been fantastic and despite the effects of the head injury he’s battled through every challenge and milestone since. We are really proud of him.
“But he still suffers from some cognitive problems and we want to make sure his future care is taken care of. We would be really grateful if anyone who saw the crash would help Irwin Mitchell piece together what happened so we can get our son the justice he deserves for this terrible incident.”
Police investigated the incident but no further action was taken against the driver.
Fran Mayes, a Partner at Irwin Mitchell’s Newcastle office who is representing Nathan said: “This was a terrible accident in which a young lad suffered serious head injuries as he enjoyed a family caravan trip in Northumberland. It’s been a traumatic eight months for Nathan and his family but any information people might have about how the accident happened could prove vital in our efforts to secure the support that Nathan will need for the rest of his life.
“Nathan has made good progress and his parents are incredibly happy to see him back at school with his friends but we want to ensure he has the best care and support in place for the future.”
