Cycling Accidents In Leicester At 10-Year High

Lawyer Urges More Care On Roads As Leicester Bicycle Crash Injuries Continue to Rise

A leading road accident lawyer has urged motorists to take more care as the number of cyclists injured on Leicester's roads has reached a 10-year high.

Leicester City Council says that 170 accidents were reported in the 12 months to April - a 20 per cent increase on the previous year. The council wants to increase the number of cyclists and has launched an online survey to get residents views on transport and a potential cycle hire scheme.

It is estimated that 10,000 ride in the city every day and the council puts the rise in accidents down to the increase in the number of cyclists increasing.

However cycling campaigners in the city have claimed the speed of drivers, cyclists taking risks, the increase of cars on the road and the state of the roads were all factors in the rise of accidents.

David Urpeth, an expert in helping road accident victims, from law firm Irwin Mitchell, said: “The figures regarding accidents involving cyclists in Leicester are startling and clearly more needs to be done to try and improve the levels of safety. All road users can and should be more careful. Equally, any issues with road surfaces need to be addressed to ensure they are made safe.

“All too often we see firsthand how lives are changed forever because of serious injuries from collisions on the road and families devastated at losing loved ones in fatal accidents. We urge all road users to be more vigilant and understanding of others to ensure that they keep safety as their number one priority.”
