Being a man is preventing a retired doctor from receiving treatment for osteoporosis
Dr John Verrier Jones, 75, suffers from osteoporosis the brittle bone disease and wants to use the drug Forsteo to combat the crippling condition but claims that being a man has stopped him receiving treatment for osteoporosis.
The drug is not licensed for use on male sufferers and because of this Bristol Primary Care Trust has refused to fund the £5,000 course of injections.
Osteoporosis is five times more common in women than in men, and regulator the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has only approved the drug for post-menopausal women. Dr Verrier Jones, from Sneyd Park, Bristol, is appealing against the PCT's decision to refuse funding.
