For the fourth year running Irwin Mitchell has scooped the prestigious “Rehabilitation Initiative of the Year – Claimant Solicitor” at the Rehabilitation First Awards in London hosted by The Post Magazine. We are delighted to have won this award again which recognises the work we do to help clients and their families rebuild their lives from serious injuries and, in many cases, funds a lifetime of future care, support and a better quality of life.
The Award is judged on evidence of the dedication by the firm to maximising an injured client’s recovery, how specific obstacles were overcome and evidence of collaborative working with defendant insurers.
Matthew Garson, an expert in serious injury from Irwin Mitchell’s Manchester office collected the award for his work in helping Robin Parker, a 54-year-old Bury man, who suffered serious injuries when he was struck by a vehicle as he crossed a pedestrian crossing in 2009.
As a result of his accident Robin suffered severe injuries, including catastrophic damage to his lower left leg, foot and ankle, which meant he had to undergo a below-knee amputation. Robin’s injuries meant he was unable to carry out everyday tasks such as cooking and going to the bathroom without a great deal of effort, and it was very difficult for him to get out and about.
However, just five weeks after taking on the case Matthew secured the help of the defendant’s insurer, NFU Mutual, to implement a co-ordinated and comprehensive rehabilitation programme for Robin. Thanks to his new lightweight wheelchair and prosthesis Robin has been able to regain his independence, and he has recently moved in to his new flat which has been specially adapted with automatic opening doors, lowered kitchen surfaces and a wet room.
The rehabilitation and support that Robin has received means he has been able to get back to his hobbies, including bird watching and now enjoys a better quality of day-to-day life, and last September he went back to college where he hopes to start a digital photography course.
Robin’s case highlights how collaboration and early intervention can maximise a claimant’s recovery and help regain previous independence and quality of life. Rehabilitation is central to the way we conduct our cases and we seek to achieve this in every single case through focused and appropriate rehabilitation, tailored to the needs of our clients. Rehabilitation is at the forefront of everything we do for our clients – we all strive to ensure they receive the very best levels of care and rehabilitation.
