Arguably the most headline-grabbing aspect of the Conservative
Party manifesto was the inclusion of a proposal which would see
people who need social care at home pay for such support until their
total assets reach a floor of £100,000.
Referred to in the media and by rival parties as a
‘dementia tax’, critics argued that the issue would
particularly impact on families where parents develop
conditions such as dementia which mean that social
care is essential. This in turn would also reduce the
inheritance received by that person’s children.
Following the concerns, the Prime Minister reacted by
stating that a cap on the total amount that people would
pay would be introduced, although no figure has been
provided as it will only be finalised after consultation.
Given its prominence in the election campaign this is
likely to be one of the main proposals to move forward in
