Government-Ordered Inquiry Into Hospital Trust Expanded For Third Time
Specialist lawyers at Irwin Mitchell have called for a thorough investigation after it was revealed more than 200 families have now raised concerns about a Hospital Trust’s maternity services.
The Care Quality Commission has already been undertaking a review into alleged poor care at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust following deaths and injuries.
However, it has been revealed today that the review has now been expanded for a third time, with 215 families now coming forward to raise fears about the care they received.
The news comes after the government, which ordered the CQC review, put the Trust in special measures amid patient safety concerns.
Irwin Mitchell’s specialist group actions team has received enquiries from patients affected who are considering legal action. Expert lawyers are now calling for each complaint to be thoroughly investigated to help restore public faith in maternity services in the region.
Expert Opinion
“There was already a great deal of concern about the number of people who had come forward with complaints about the care they received from the Trust, so today’s latest development is likely to add to that concern
“Through our work we often see the heartbreak that families can be left to face following failings in care so it is vital that each of the 215 complaints is thoroughly investigated.
“It is also important that, if during the course of the investigation any areas where patient care can be improved are identified, appropriate measures are put in place.” Tim Annett - Partner
The review was launched in 2017 to initially look at 23 cases. In August it was widened to 40 before being expanded again in September to 104 cases.
The review is looking at cases between 1998 and 2017.
Irwin Mitchell’s specialist medical negligence team has vast experience providing advice and support to families across the UK affected by a range of problems with maternity care.
