Social Worker Sentenced To 19 Years After Being Found Guilty Of Historical Abuse
Lawyers acting for a woman who was abused as a teenager by social worker Raymond Griffin in the 1990s have revealed their determination to help her gain justice after he was sentenced to 19 years in prison.
Griffin, 59, from Anchorsholme in Blackpool, has been jailed after being found guilty of three charges of rape and seven of indecent assault at a trial at Preston Crown Court in July, with all of the charges relating to a girl who was placed into the care home where he worked after being abused by her father.
The trial heard how at one point the girl ran away from the home and contacted Childline, but no further action was taken. However, Lancashire Police launched an investigation after she came forward to them in 2010.
Now, following the conclusion of the criminal case related to Griffin, Griffin’s victim has instructed specialist abuse lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to help her launch a civil action against Lancashire Country Council in relation to the ordeal she faced at the local authority-operated home.
Emma Crowther, the specialist abuse lawyer at Irwin Mitchell’s Newcastle office who is representing Griffin’s victim, said:
Expert Opinion
“This is another terrible case of historical abuse in which a young, vulnerable individual has suffered at the hands of a person placed in a position of authority and trust.
“Through our work on cases of this nature, we have seen how incredibly difficult it can be for victims of this kind of abuse to come forward and have their voices heard, particularly as many are often concerned that they may not be taken seriously.
“Following the incredible bravery shown by our client, we are determined to help her gain justice and also access to vital financial support which will aid her efforts to come to terms with her ordeal and help her hopefully move forward with her life.
“We would also urge anyone affected by similar problems to not suffer in silence and come forward at the earliest opportunity.” Emma Crowther - Senior Associate Solicitor
