Specialist lawyers have been asked for help after wedding guests fell ill during celebrations at a Dominican Republic holiday resort last year, with some even requiring hospital treatment.
Irwin Mitchell’s International Personal Injury team has been instructed by members of the wedding party affected by the outbreak at the Royalton Punta Cana in November 2016, including one guest hospitalised during the holiday and two others admitted to hospital on their return to the UK.
Among those who have instructed the international personal injury experts is Linda Probert, 67, from Milford Haven in South Wales, who was the grandmother of the bride, and is continuing to suffer on-going gastric symptoms several months on from her stay at the resort. She revealed how her granddaughter’s wedding was ‘completely ruined’ by the illnesses.
Amandeep Samra, an associate solicitor in Irwin Mitchell’s International Personal Injury team who is representing the affected holidaymakers, said:
Expert Opinion
“We are very concerned by the first-hand accounts we have heard regarding the illness problems at the Royalton Punta Cana.
“We already act for clients affected by separate cases of illness at the resort in January 2015 and both June and October 2016, so it is concerning that we have been contacted yet again in relation to problems in this hotel. Gastric illnesses can have a serious long-term impact on the health of those affected, often leaving them with side-effects and conditions which can sometimes be permanent.
“With this in mind, we are determined to help our clients gain the answers regarding what they have faced. As part of our enquiries, we would also be keen to hear from anyone else who faced similar problems.” Amandeep Singh Samra - Associate Solicitor
Linda Probert is continuing to suffer with stomach cramps and severe bloating, three months after returning to the UK, as a result of the problems she faced during her two-week stay at the Royalton Punta Cana.
Looking back on the holiday, she said: “Given it was my granddaughter’s wedding, I am very disappointed with conditions at the hotel. Friends also told me that there were cockroaches in their room and the swimming pool water also looked murky.
“To make matters worse, many of the wedding party started to fall ill. I was bedridden at one point and while it was terrible, I just couldn’t help but think of the bride and groom in that situation.
“We all paid a lot of money to visit the resort and attend the wedding, which was obviously supposed to be a very special day.
“The whole holiday was completely ruined and we all now just want to know what happened and whether more could have been done to stop us from falling ill. We simply feel that we deserve answers regarding the nightmare we endured.”
