Serious Injury Experts Call For More To Be Done To Make Roads Safer
Serious injury experts at leading law firm Irwin Mitchell have called for more to be done to make London’s roads safer, after new figures reveal the number of deaths and series injuries from motorcycle and scooter accidents has risen.
According to figures released by Transport for London (TfL) there number of deaths year on year has risen from 27 to 36.
Serious injuries up to September 2015 were also up to 514 from 507 the previous year, according to provisional data.
The figures coincided with a pledge that more officers will be posted at junctions where motorcycle collisions are most likely to occur, at key times.
In a bid to reduce the number of motorcycle and scooter related deaths and injuries, since September police have stopped 5,389 riders, issued 742 traffic offence reports, 1,335 verbal warnings, seized 96 motorcycles and made 10 arrests.
Police are also going to target the boroughs where motorcyclists are at greatest risk of injury and officers will be deployed to accident hotspots across London.
London mayor Boris Johnson said: "We need every single motorcyclist to feel safe on our streets and this work is key to that goal."
TfL has published a guide - the Urban Motorcycle Design Handbook - to aid safer road design for motorcycle and scooter riders. They have also found backing for Motorcycle Industry Association accredited motorcycle training centres across London to try to improve rider skills and confidence.
