Expert Lawyers Investigating Asbestos Exposure At Work
A Bingley man diagnosed with mesothelioma, a terminal cancer caused by exposure to asbestos decades ago, is appealing to his former colleagues for help after being diagnosed with mesothelioma, a terminal cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.
David Greenwood, 66, from Bingley is just one of the people diagnosed with the mesothelioma currently being assisted by Leeds-based law firm Irwin Mitchell.
He is hoping Action Mesothelioma Day (1 July) will provide a platform for him to appeal to his former colleagues to come forward and help provide any information they have concerning how and where has was exposed to asbestos while working for Ellison Circlips Limited.
David worked at the company, which was also known as Ellison Holdings PLC, Transtechnology Limited and Cirteq Limited, for 44 years, spending time at the firm’s Harden, Bingley and Keighley locations.
He told his lawyers at Irwin Mitchell, who are investigating his exposure to asbestos during his time at the company, that he would walk past large furnaces every day to reach his department.
He recalled that these furnaces were lagged with asbestos insulation and that the equipment required regular repair and maintenance. David said workers would remove the lagging to access the furnace, which often resulted in asbestos dust and fibres entering his working environment.
David was not provided overalls until around 1990 and he was never provided with any protective equipment during his time at the company and recalls his clothes being covered in dust when he came home from work.
Lucy Andrews, an expert industrial disease lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, representing David, said: “Asbestos-related diseases are the biggest occupational killer of all time and mesothelioma kills over 2,500 people in the UK every year, often impacting people decades after they were exposed to the material.
“It’s well-known that asbestos was commonly used in the building trade and utilised in commercial building such as factories and warehouses. It is vital on Action Mesothelioma Day we raise awareness of the risks the substance poses and the reality of living with mesothelioma.
“Individuals, like David, continue to be diagnosed with this terrible disease every day and it is important to raise awareness of the continuing battle people are facing.
“We are now appealing to those who worked with David to come forward and provide details on the presence of asbestos at the firm, the warning provided to staff on the dangers of asbestos and what measures, if any, were taken to protect employees from inhaling asbestos dust and fibres.”
Action Mesothelioma Day take place on Friday 1 July this year and aims to bring together victims of the disease, families affected by it and support groups that can offer help to those impacted by mesothelioma, in a bid to raise awareness of the disease and the fact it causes the deaths of over 2,500 people in the UK every year.
David, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy to control the disease, said: “Mesothelioma has had a huge impact on my life. The treatment I’m undergoing has left me feeling weak, caused me to lose my appetite and left me relying on friends and family more than ever.
“I’m worried about what the future holds for me and can’t help but feel upset and dismayed that this terrible disease may have been caused by asbestos exposure at work.
“I’m hoping some of my former colleagues will come forward with any information they have about the presence of asbestos at Ellison Circlips Limited so I can get justice.”
