Specialist Public Health Lawyers Welcome Food Safety Precautions
Supermarket chain Asda has issued a recall on jars of pickled beetroot amid fears they could potentially contain the deadly botulism bacteria.
It is still not completely clear how the bacteria may have got into the 710g jars of ‘Asda Chosen By You Pickled Crinkle Cut Beetroot’, however a statement from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) highlighted that “the issue relates to controlling factors to prevent the growth and toxin production of Clostridium botulinum.”
The Food Standards Agency has commented further, telling customers who have bought the jars to not consume them as botulinum can cause “serious” food poisoning.
Botulism bacteria produce some of the most powerful toxins that attack the nervous system and in some cases cause paralysis. Other symptoms include blurred or double vision, drooping eyelids, difficulty swallowing or difficulty speaking.
