‘Up To 50 Ill’ Following Problems Linked To Hi-Tide Bar
Specialist lawyers representing victims of major illness outbreaks in the UK and abroad have called on Public Health Wales to work quickly to determine the cause of an outbreak linked to the Hi-Tide Bar in Porthcawl which has left up to 50 people unwell.
Public Health Wales and Bridgend County Borough Council’s environmental health department are investigating after the cases of diarrhoea and vomiting emerged following private functions held at the site.
All of those affected are recovering at home and authorities believe there is no wider public health risk. The Hi-Tide remains open for business and is cooperating with the investigation.
Public Health Wales has urged anyone unwell with such symptoms to seek medical advice if their illness becomes severe or lasts more than 48 hours.
The specialist Public Health team at Irwin Mitchell have vast expertise in helping those affected by illness outbreaks both in the UK and abroad to gain answers regarding the problems they faced and access to vital financial support. They notably act for more than 300 people who fell ill in an outbreak linked to the Exeter Arms in Middlemoor earlier this year.
Expert Opinion
“It is very worrying to see the reports of these problems and the number of those affected. While it is welcome that the victims identified are recovering, it is vital that, if not already done so, every possible step is taken to investigate and understand how the victims came to fall ill.

“The seriousness of illness outbreaks of this nature cannot be downplayed, as we have seen numerous cases when those affected have developed long-term health problems from which they never fully recover.

“With this in mind, it is key that any information gathered is shared widely to ensure that – where possible – lessons are learned from this outbreak.” Jatinder Paul - Partner
