The heartbroken widow of a former factory worker is appealing to his ex-colleagues to come forward with vital information she needs to secure justice after he died from an incurable cancer caused by exposure to asbestos decades ago.
Clive Brimmell died at the age of just 59 in November 2013 after suffering with peritoneal mesothelioma which affects the abdomen. His widow, Eileen, from Welwyn Garden City, has since instructed specialist asbestos-related disease lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to investigate where her husband came into contact with the deadly substance.
It takes decades from contact with asbestos before symptoms of illness develop and, unfortunately, Clive passed away before he was able to provide details of his exposure. His wife believes he may have come into contact with asbestos during his employment at GKN Lincoln Electric, between approximately 1979 and 1985 when he worked at the Nabisco cereal factory in Welwyn Garden City.
His role at GKN Lincoln Electric involved manufacturing welding rods, which may have contained asbestos, as the substance was often utilised for its heat resistant and insulating properties.
It is thought Clive may also have been exposed to asbestos while working as a foreman at the Nabisco factory, which was also known as the ‘Shredded Wheat factory’, as the property contained asbestos lagged pipework which Clive could have been exposed to whilst carrying out his duties.
Eileen, who was married to Clive for 30 years is now urging his former workmates to come forward with information on the working conditions at the two factories and what measures, if any, were in place to prevent workers being exposed to asbestos.
