Sims was soundchecking before his set at Manchester nightclub Sankeys when an airhorn was sounded just inches from his ear.
The Chicago DJ, who scored multiple hits in the early 90s, told his Facebook fans that a sound “louder and more shrill than anything I’d ever heard” caused him to jump in the air and scream in pain.
“The pain was followed by an intense ringing and muffled silence,” he wrote. Sims was then taken to hospital and informed he had sound induced hearing loss (SILH).
As SILH can be permanent, Sims is concerned that he may be unable to continue his work in the music industry, both behind the decks and in the studio.
Lil Louis apologised to his fans for being unable to perform and is still in hospital, awaiting further tests.
