James Robinson, 35, an Olivier Award nominated actor who has appeared in theatre, film and television programmes including Hollyoaks and Crossroads, was crossing Battersea Rise at the junction with Northcote Road on the evening of 15th November 2013, when he was hit by a car which accelerated through a crossing before driving off.
The driver was later arrested by police and on 8th September 2014 at Wimbledon Magistrates Court he was found guilty of careless driving and failing to stop at an accident scene. The case has now been adjourned for sentencing until 6th October 2014.
James sustained a serious head injury after his head shattered the windscreen of the car and he is undergoing neuropsychological rehabilitation. He also sustained a fractured leg, a shattered knee cap, and a dislocated shoulder and jaw. He remained in St George’s Hospital for over a week and was in a wheelchair for over three months. He remains unable to return to work since the accident.
James is now pursuing legal action and has contacted specialist serious injury experts at Irwin Mitchell to represent him.
James, from Battersea, said: “It has been a complete nightmare since the accident and my whole family has been affected. My parents live in Spain and they had to fly over to help care for me. My wife and I have a one-year-old daughter who I cannot look after and I remain unable to work as a result of the life-changing injuries I sustained.
“I would like to express my gratitude to the paramedics who assisted me at the scene. I was left for dead in the middle of the road and the accident will have a huge impact on my ability to work and look after my family. I’m going to need treatment for my injuries for a long time and I will need specialist support to try and help me return to work.
“I am grateful that the witnesses were able to identify the driver so the police were able to arrest him and I am thankful that justice has been done and the court has found him guilty. I can now concentrate on treatment for my injuries and trying to rebuild my life.”
Anna Pask, an expert serious injury solicitor at Irwin Mitchell, who is representing James, said: “Mr Robinson was very seriously injured in this road traffic collision and is now facing a long recovery battle to get himself back on track.
“We are working with him to secure the necessary funds to help with his recovery and rehabilitation and to provide him with the specialist care he needs.
“Sadly we see so many similar cases and drivers have to take responsibility for their actions. Fortunately there were several witnesses who were able to identify the driver and the police were able to persecute him. The outcome could have been very different and he was effectively left for dead.”
