Julia Whitwam, from Bradway in Sheffield, suffered severe injuries to her right leg and ankle after a red Mini Cooper mounted the pavement and collided with her on Bradway Road at approximately 10am on 30 July 2014. The driver of the vehicle had lost control of his car after swerving to avoid a Honda that had pulled out from the Sainsburys store forecourt, next to the Murco garage and opposite Totley golf club.
Brave Julia managed to push her 15 month old son, Noah’s pram out of the way to safety and he escaped with minor injuries. However the car crashed hard into Julia and her dog Ruby leaving them both with broken legs.
The 30-year-old was left shocked and seriously injured after the collision and has now instructed serious injury experts at law firm Irwin Mitchell to investigate and help her gain access to specialist rehabilitation treatments, such as physiotherapy, to help with her recovery.
The accident is also being investigated by South Yorkshire Police and now Julia’s legal team is appealing to anybody who witnessed the incident to come forward as their evidence may prove vital in securing justice for her.
Rachel Cooper, a specialist serious injury lawyer at Irwin Mitchell’s Sheffield office, who is representing Julia, said: “The collision has had a significant impact on Julia’s life. She is still recovering from her injuries which have affected her ability to work. She continues to receive care and support from her family and friends but is unable to independently manage the care of her young son.
“The police are currently investigating this case and we would like to ask any witnesses to the collision to come forward as they could help us secure justice for Julia.
“This case must act as a reminder to drivers about the importance of driving responsibly on the roads and to take extra care, especially around junctions and crossings. Over the years we have worked with many people whose lives have been devastated by injuries caused in accidents on the roads and we want to make sure that road safety for both pedestrians and drivers remains a priority.”
After the accident, Julia was taken to the Northern General Hospital where she remained for 11 days. She had two operations on her right ankle and was fitted with a metal cage which she will have to wear for a number of months. She was also given crutches when she was discharged from hospital to help her get around.
Julia has not been able to return to work as a marketing manager as she is still struggling with her mobility. Her husband Pete has been helping out with daily household chores and looking after Noah. Ruby, the family’s dog, was fitted with a pot on her back leg after the accident and requires regular check-ups at the vets to monitor her progress.
Julia recalls: “I have struggled to come to terms with the accident and my injuries as I know I have a long way to go before my life can get back to normal. I am incredibly grateful that I suffered the brunt of the crash rather than Noah; I can’t even bare to think about what could have happened if I hadn’t pushed him out of the way.
I hope that anyone who saw what happened to me will come forward as any information could prove to be vital in helping my battle for justice.”
