Licia Wolff, from Morecambe in Lancashire, booked a four-star holiday with her husband Michael and two sons to Cancun in June last year through Thomas Cook, but says their plans for a relaxing break were left in tatters when three of the four holidaymakers fell ill.
The family originally booked to stay at the Gran Caribe Hotel for a two-week break from the 6 June 2013 but moved after just two days as they say the resort was not the peaceful surroundings they expected.
The family advised that Thomas Cook recommended they stay at the nearby Gran Port Real, but Licia reported concerns including that on occasions some of the food was left uncovered which meant flies would land on the food. In addition she reported that sometimes the food was served lukewarm and on occasions glasses and cutlery were dirty.
The family asked to be moved again and Thomas Cook recommended the Royal Playa Del Carmen Hotel which they moved to on the 10th of June. Shortly after Licia, Michael and son Joshua Airey fell ill with sickness, diarrhoea, stomach cramps and fever. Son Joe Airey, 21, was the only family member that did not fall ill.
Joshua, 18, lost a stone in weight and Licia had to visit the doctor at the resort and was given antibiotics. On return home she had three weeks off work due to her continuing illness.
Amandeep Samra, the legal specialist in Irwin Mitchell’s International Personal Injury team, representing the family, said: “Unfortunately our clients’ holiday was ruined by severe gastric illness and three of the family are still suffering with on-going health problems as a result.
“Our work on behalf of victims of illness outbreaks both in the UK and abroad means that we understand the impact that gastric illness can have on those affected - often leaving people with long-term health problems
“We have commenced investigations into what was the cause of the illness the family suffered from.”
Licia, a Beautician, said: “I was really looking forward to spending some quality time with my family – it was going to be our last holiday together before the boys left home and I wanted it to be a holiday to remember for all of us.
“The illness the three of us suffered completely ruined the remainder of the holiday. To this day I am still suffering from symptoms and it has exacerbated my Irritable Bowel Syndrome which was previously under control before we went away.
“I hope that now with the help of Irwin Mitchell we can get some answers as to why we fell ill.”
