Five Confirmed Cases Of Illness Under Investigation
A cluster of five confirmed cases and four suspected cases of E.coli O157 which have been linked to Khushi’s Indian Restaurant in Dunfermline are being investigated, it has been confirmed.
NHS Fife’s Public Health Department has revealed that all of those affected by the problems which emerged at the start of this month are recovering at home.
The restaurant has been co-operating fully with Fife Council Environmental Health through the course of the problems and has also reopened following deep cleaning and the introduction of other measures.
Dr Margaret Hannah, consultant in public health medicine at NHS Fife, said: “E.coli O157 infection can be very serious and I would advise anyone who has experienced symptoms such as diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, bloody stools, stomach pain and fever to contact their GP or telephone NHS24 on 111, particularly if they ate from Khushi’s in early May.”
Expert Opinion
We are very concerned to see reports of these problems emerge in Dunfermline and hope authorities in the area can continue to work both quickly and thoroughly to identify how the issues were caused. <br/> <br/>"Through our work representing people who have contracted infections such as E.coli at hotels, restaurants and on cruise ships across the world, we have seen first-hand how such illness can lead to significant long-term health problems in some cases. <br/> <br/>"As a result, it is absolutely vital that these issues are not underestimated and that everything possible is done to ensure that lessons can be learned which will avoid such issues being repeated again in the future."
