Cement Identified On Riverside Walkway
Asbestos cement has been found close to the multimillion pound Commonwealth Games Village in Glasgow, weeks before the major sporting event begins.
Daily Record reports that a cyclist spotted the material close to the site while using a riverside walkway along the Clyde, with experts subsequently confirming the cement contained the deadly material.
It is thought that the material may have been flytipped and experts have warned that the area should be sealed off from the public for work to continue to inspect the site.
Glasgow City Council has confirmed that a licensed contractor has been contacted to dispose of materials in the area, while the developers behind the athletes village confirmed that the materials had not originated from that site.
Expert Opinion
It is very worrying that these materials have seemingly been dumped in an area which is both used by the general public and very close to the athletes village for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. <br/> <br/>"Asbestos poses a significant risk to workers and the public and our work on behalf of victims and the families of those who have died as a result of related diseases such as mesothelioma means we understand the terrible impact that exposure can have. <br/> <br/>"While it is a priority that these materials are handled and disposed of safely, it is equally important that work continues to tackle flytipping and ensure that businesses and the public understand their responsibilities when it comes to handling dangerous materials such as asbestos."
