Seventeen Cases Of E. Coli Linked To The Khyber Pass Takeaway
The number of people who have reported suffering from gastric illness after eating food bought from The Khyber Pass takeaway in the Hyson Green area of Nottingham has now increased to more than 100.
Latest figures from the City Council have revealed that they have received notification of 135 cases of reported gastrointestinal problems. It has also been reported that 17 of these cases have now had test results which have been positive for the presence of E. Coli.
According to the Nottingham Post, one of The Khyber Pass customers affected was heavily pregnant.
The takeaway was initially closed last month following a ruling at the Magistrates Court after 13 people reported falling ill after eating food from the establishment. However since then, more reports of illness have emerged and there have been a number of confirmed E. Coli test results. Therefore, the council has confirmed that investigations are still ongoing into the cause of the outbreak.
Paul Dales, from Nottingham City Council, said: "Tests will continue in order to establish the source of the outbreak and until this is clear and suitable measures have been taken, the premises will remain closed."
Expert Opinion
In this case, it is extremely concerning to see that the number of people falling ill has increased. Our work on behalf of victims of illness outbreaks both here in the UK and abroad means that we understand the impact that gastric illness can have on those affected - often leaving people with long-term health problems from which, in some cases, they may never recover. <br/> <br/>"We have seen the serious impact that an E. Coli infection can have. It is a serious bacterial infection which can lead to long-term health problems, such as kidney failure. The effect that E. Coli can have on children in particular can be significant and should not be underestimated. <br/> <br/>"As a result, it is important that reassurances are given that all is being done to ensure that these problems are not repeated in the future. It is welcome to see steps taken by the council and the Magistrates Court to address this issue and we hope that a thorough investigation can be completed quickly to provide comprehensive answers regarding the problems. <br/> <br/>"Such information will go towards ensuring that, where possible, lessons can be learned which should help to prevent future issues of this nature from emerging."
